A few words from 26 000 suppliers of wood and refined wood products

From Great Grandparents To Great Grandchildren

For us, owning a forest means accepting a responsibility: To be able to hand down the forest to our children and grandchildren in even better condition than it was when we took over from our parents.

From one generation to the next we have cared for a Swedish treasure. Mellanskog is nearly 26 000 private forest owners in the heart of Sweden. Together we own more than 1,8 million hectares of forest land.

We have the privilege of living where conditions for forestry are unusually favourable. Thanks to the ideal climate and soil, trees in our part of Sweden grow slowly enough to provide the very best quality of wood. We who own the forests act accordingly. By managing and harvesting our forests in harmony with nature we have been able to live on what the forest provides - generation after generation. And we still do.

Today our forest management continues on a small scale. Most of us have inherited the land from our parents. Now we are keeping it for our children who will eventually take over. This creates a special relationship with the forest; although we own it, we must care for it as though it were on loan. What we take from the forest we must carefully return to it.

To promote forward-looking forest management that would take into consideration both regrowth and a variety of species we joined together to form a forest-owners` association, Mellanskog. This association have developed into a modern, competitive enterprise of the same name. For 26 000 forest owners, Mellanskog ensures that we have the resources to give forests even better care, and that we can sell and refine our products under our own management. To those of you who buy wood and refined wood products, we hope that the name of Mellanskog will convey your spirit of care and respect for our greatest treasure, the forest.

Forestry cannot be carried out without an impact on the environment. But today we know that we can maintain biological variety in the forest and still have a valuable, high-capacity wood products industry. The secret can be found in knowledge, responsibility and the privilege of living close to nature.

Forestfuels

Woodfuel can be burned to generate heat or electricity and is an important part of the renewable energy supply. A large amount of the woodfuel in Sweden is generated as forest fuel from harvesting operations.

Mellanskog is one of the leading producers of forestfuel in the middle part of Sweden. The forestfuel is harvested in thinnings and regeneration fellings (e.g. branches and tops).

The forestfuel is transported from the forest to the roadside by forwarder, covered with paper material and chipped when the content of moist reach the customer demand. Logs from harvesting operations is transported to biofuel - terminals for storage and later on, delivered as chipped forestfuel to heating-/powerplants. Mellanskog also delivers logs directly to customers.

Mellanskog harvesting operations is certified according the ISO 14001 and the PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes).
